Cape Wind remained in the news today, as several Massachusetts politicians spoke out against the cost of electricity from the newly approved 130-turbine wind farm.
The Boston Herald continued its coverage of the power purchase agreement, which has National Grid buying half of Cape Wind’s output for 20.7 cents per kilowatt/hour. Jay Fitzgerald wrote today about U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-MA) and Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill comparing the wind energy project to the notoriously expensive Big Dig road construction project in Boston.
Fitzgerald quoted Delahunt saying that “this is reminiscent of how the cost of the Big Dig escalated far beyond what the people of Massachusetts were led to believe … as the pieces of information on Cape Wind come out, the costs keep getting more exorbitant.”
The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities is now reviewing the power purchase agreement and must approve the deal before Cape Wind can move forward.
In Maine, the Portland Press Herald reported that Gov. John Baldacci celebrated the passage of the Ocean Energy Bill, which seeks to implement recommendations of a state ocean energy task force. The Press Herald also reported that the Maine Public Utilities Commission will open bidding in September for developers who want to build a 25-megawatt floating wind farm in a designated test area.
