Energy Seeks “Groundbreaking” Offshore Wind Technology

By William Morgan

The Department of Energy issued a request for information this month seeking “advanced technology demonstration projects” that would push the offshore wind industry forward.

The RFI, issued June 14th, requires responses by July 14 but does not guarantee an eventual funding source.  The document indicates, however, that the department might fund “ground-breaking” proposals that come out of this process.

DOE said that it is “seeking recommendations from developers, research consortia, and industry groups on the types of support activities and technical assistance they feel would have the greatest impact on reducing demonstration project cost, timeline to deployment, and risks – technical, financial or social.”

Responses, limited to 10 pages, should be sent by email to WindRFI@go.doe.qov.

The RFI was issued by DOE’s Wind Program, which is planning research programs to address “market barriers” and to “reduce [the] cost of offshore wind energy through innovation and testing.”
